The University of Delhi is the premier university of the country, known for its high standards in teaching and research and attracts eminent scholars to its faculty. Ever since its inception in 1922 by an Act of the then Central Legislative Assembly, a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research has made the University of Delhi a role-model and path-setter for other Universities in the country. The President of India is the Visitor, the Vice President is the Chancellor and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India is the Pro-Chancellor of the University.
At present, there are 16 faculties, 86 academic departments, 77 colleges and 5 other recognized institutes spread all over the city. Several Departments have been awarded the status of the Centres of Advanced Studies by University Grants Commission. In recognition of their outstanding academic work, several Departments of the university receive grants from the UGC under its Special Assistance Programme.
The main office of the University including the Vice Chancellor’s office is housed in the picturesque Vice Regal Lodge near the green expanse of the Ridge. The University has two beautiful campuses, North and South. While the North Campus boasts of its historical buildings, the younger South Campus has more modern infrastructure and is now spread across 69 acres of green, hilly terrain and its buildings blend attractively with the natural surroundings.
The University of Delhi is ranked no.1 in the India Today/Nielsen Ranking. It is primarily a research-based University, having the highest quality research publications in the country. The University is ranked No.1 by the Department of Science and Technology in terms of the publication output.
